The Nine Eyes of Google Street View
The Nine Eyes of Google Street View collects hundreds of found images from Rafman's ongoing project, begun in 2008, in which he combs Google's Street View archive for scenes its roving cameras caught by accident: car crashes, animals in odd postures, masked figures, landscapes lit like paintings. The book, published by Jean Boîte Éditions in a bilingual English/French edition of 160 color pages, was the first monograph devoted to the project and pairs Rafman's selections with a critical text by architect and artist Guillaume Aubry.
Rafman is a Canadian artist, born 1981 in Montreal, whose work across video, digital media, and photography examines how internet culture reshapes identity and desire. Nine Eyes established him as a central figure in post-internet art and has been shown and collected internationally, including at MoMA, the Stedelijk Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada, alongside later works such as Kool-Aid Man in Second Life and Dream Journal.
