James Rosenquist: the Big Paintings: Thirty Years
James Rosenquist: The Big Paintings: Thirty Years is the catalogue for the Leo Castelli Gallery’s thirtieth-anniversary exhibition of Rosenquist, shown at 420 West Broadway in New York from 15 October to 12 November 1994.
Susan Brundage edited the book, and it includes an interview by Craig Adcock. Rosenquist’s own bibliography lists it as published by the Leo Castelli Gallery in association with Rizzoli. The gallery gives the size as 12 1/4 by 15 1/4 inches and the length as 94 pages, with 56 black-and-white and 21 color illustrations.
Rosenquist (1933–2017) became known in the 1960s as a leading American Pop artist alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. His studio’s biography says he drew on his early work as a billboard painter, recombining images from print advertisements, photographs and popular periodicals into bold, mysterious compositions. He has had solo exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
