Paul's Book

MACK · 2019

Paul's Book is Collier Schorr's two-year photographic project with Paul Hameline, a young French artist and model, made on visits to his parents' house in Paris.

Schorr met Hameline in New York in 2015, when he came to her home for a go-see. His family lives in the Marais, around the corner from the hotel where she stays in Paris, so they began meeting there, taking pictures and talking. MACK says the aim was to use photography as a social space, where his body and her eyes could test each other's fascinations. Many of the pictures first appeared in Re Edition magazine, and the book extends that story. MACK published it in October 2019 as a quarter-bound hardback of 144 pages.

Schorr was born in 1963, grew up in Queens and studied journalism at the School of Visual Arts. She is best known for adolescent portraits that combine photographic realism with invented narrative, and her photographs were in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2003 International Center for Photography Triennial. MACK also published August (2022), the third volume of her Forests and Fields series after Neighbors (2006) and Blumen (2010), and Cosmos (2024), a book of drawings that began with her photographs of Nicole Eisenman.
