The Enigma Symposium 1994

Hugh Skillen's self-published record documents the second annual Enigma Reunion, a gathering of Bletchley Park and Y Service veterans held in Bedford in 1994. It collects their personal accounts of Britain's wartime signals intelligence work alongside Skillen's own commentary and documentation.

Skillen edited and issued a volume from each of these reunions through the 1990s and into the early 2000s. This one runs to roughly 119 pages: six of front matter plus 113 pages of text, with 26 pages of illustrations, diagrams, and photographs. Few libraries hold it, and this record is built largely from booksellers' physical descriptions rather than a library catalogue entry.

Skillen was himself a Y Service veteran and a trained linguist who worked in wartime signals intelligence. After the war he returned to teaching French at Harrow County School for Boys. In later life he devoted himself to recording the wartime work of his Bletchley Park and Y Service colleagues. He self-published this symposium series from his home in Pinner, Middlesex, alongside book-length histories including Spies of the Airwaves.
