Love & Hate & Other Mysteries: Found Altered Snapshots from the Collection of Thierry Struvay

Love & Hate & Other Mysteries collects one hundred found snapshots that have been physically altered by the people who once owned them, faces and figures removed with scissors, pen or tears.

Drawn entirely from Thierry Struvay's collection of vernacular photography, the book reproduces 25 color and 75 black-and-white images in which a face has been cut out to fit a locket, a figure scratched away in anger, or a couple torn apart down the middle. An introduction by Glenn O'Brien frames the collection as a study of the private emotional histories left legible in damaged photographs. The book was published as a 144-page hardcover by August Editions in 2016.

The book belongs to a wider practice of found-photography collecting and publishing, treating the marks left on discarded snapshots as a form of authorship in their own right.
