Vernacular Photography
Thierry Struvay's Vernacular Photography New York 2011-2014 collects street pictures the Belgian photographer made on repeated trips to the city over three years, published as a bilingual French/English cloth-bound volume by the Brussels imprint Sorryweareclosed.
The book is unpaginated, printed at 25 x 17 cm with color and black-and-white plates throughout, in a first edition of 300 numbered copies. The pictures work in the vernacular, snapshot-derived mode the title names: unposed street incident, signage, and passersby rather than a formal documentary project, gathered without captions or a fixed sequence of neighborhoods.
Struvay also published the monograph Love & Hate & Other Mysteries (August Editions, 2016), continuing the same loose, observational street approach outside New York.
