Parallel Encyclopedia #1
Parallel Encyclopedia #1 is a 592-page artist's book in which Batia Suter composes a single sequence of images taken from other books.
Roma Publications issued it in 2007 as ROMA 100, at 21 × 28 cm. Suter drew the pictures from old books she has collected over the years. About a thousand newspaper images gathered between 1998 and 2006 stayed out of the book because of their colour and newspaper look. She made them into a film sequence on DVD, Parallel Slideshow, which Roma says is not distributed commercially. The book was in the selection for Best Verzorgde Boeken 2007.
Suter, born in Switzerland in 1967 and based in Amsterdam, studied at the art academies in Zürich and Arnhem and trained at the Werkplaats Typografie. Her later books include Surface Series (2011), Parallel Encyclopedia #2 (2016), Radial Grammar (2018), Hexamiles (Mont-Voisin) (2019) and Exosphere (2023).
