This is Swoon's first monograph, published by Abrams in 2010 to survey the full range of the Brooklyn street artist's practice. It moves from her wheat-pasted paper cutouts and block prints of street figures to the large-scale collaborative projects that followed.
The book documents her life-size prints and cutouts as they weather and decay on city walls around the world, then follows her Swimming Cities project, in which teams of collaborators built makeshift steamships from scavenged junk for voyages that were part sculpture and part performance. It also covers Toyshop, the art collective she co-founded, which staged public theater and street events. Essays by fellow artists and by gallery owner Jeffrey Deitch accompany the photographs.
Swoon, born Caledonia Curry, studied painting at Pratt Institute and began pasting work on New York City streets in 1999. Her pieces are held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Tate Modern. This monograph followed an earlier, narrower catalog Deitch Projects published for her 2008 gallery exhibition.
