Tom of Finland: The Art of Pleasure
Taschen
· 1998
· Hardcover
A large-format Taschen survey of the homoerotic drawings of Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen, 1920-1991), published in Cologne in 1998 with text by Micha Ramakers.
The volume runs to 349 pages in a small-folio format of about 35 by 27 cm and carries its text in English, French and German. Its plates are a mix of colour, black-and-white and tinted illustrations. Ramakers is credited as text author, and the book is catalogued as a biography and a catalogue of erotic art.
Laaksonen signed his drawings "Tom" and became known as Tom of Finland after his first drawings were published in 1957. He worked in advertising before turning to full-time erotic art in 1973, and a 1976 exhibition in Hamburg was followed by shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. The Tom of Finland Foundation continues to look after his work.
