Michael Wolf: Works
A survey of more than four decades of work by the photographer Michael Wolf (1954-2019), made for his first major retrospective.
Peperoni Books published it in 2017, as the retrospective opened at the Rencontres d'Arles. The 296 pages carry more than 400 colour and black-and-white images. They come from every significant series, among them Informal Solutions, Architecture of Density, 100 x 100, Bottrop-Ebel, Magazine Stories, The Real Toy Story, Real Fake Art, Tokyo Compression, the Google Street View pictures, The Transparent City, Paris Rooftops and Bastard Chairs.
The book runs from student work through photojournalism to the later art, with texts by Marc Feustel, Jan-Philipp Sendker, Wim van Sinderen and Wolf. Wolf was born in Munich, studied with Otto Steinert at the University of Essen, and spent eight years in Hong Kong as a photojournalist for Stern. Around 2003 Wolf turned to fine-art photography.
