Francesca Woodman: Works from the Sammlung Verbund by Francesca Woodman

Francesca Woodman: Works from the Sammlung Verbund

by Francesca Woodman
D.A.P. / Distributed Art Publishers · 2014 · Hardcover

The English-language edition of the catalogue for Francesca Woodman's 2014 exhibition at the Sammlung Verbund in Vienna, edited by Gabriele Schor and Elisabeth Bronfen.

The book reproduces 80 photographs from the Verbund collection, 20 of them previously unpublished, each at its original size. The Verbund holds the largest body of Woodman's work outside her estate, and the exhibition, curated by Schor, ran from 30 January to 21 May 2014. The essays read Woodman's photographs through the tradition of the tableau vivant and examine her use of props such as mirrors, gloves and wallpaper and her staging of space. Schor contributes the foreword and introduction. Bronfen, Betsy Berne, Johannes Binotto, Beate Söntgen and Abigail Solomon-Godeau supply further texts, and the volume includes an illustrated biography. It runs 304 pages in hardcover.

Woodman (1958–1981) grew up in an artistic family, began photographing in her early teens and produced her body of work in under a decade. Bronfen's introduction argues against readings that treat her images as foreshadowing her early death. A German edition appeared from Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne, in the same year.
