Airplane Mode by John Yuyi

Airplane Mode

by John Yuyi
Dashwood Books · 2021 · Zine

The first zine of John Yuyi's Naked Selfie On Airplane project, published by Dashwood Books in 2021 in a signed edition of 300, with fifteen phone selfies taken nude in airplane lavatories.

The series began in 2018 on a sixteen-hour flight from New York to Taipei. Yuyi set herself the rule of taking a naked selfie every time she boarded a plane, in no more time than an ordinary bathroom break. The pictures are full-bleed colour, with no text or design apart from the images. Each shows the mirror, the iPhone, the grey plastic and safety signage of the cabin, and whatever came to hand: a roll of toilet paper tied over her eyes on the cover, a paper seat cover framing her face inside. The zine is part of Dashwood's series on emerging artists, all in the same 20-page, 5.25 by 8 inch format. This copy is signed. A sequel, Airplane Mode 2, followed in 2026.
