Blizzard Seventy-Seven

Blizzard Seventy-Seven is the catalogue for Peter Doig's first major European survey, gathering the image-saturated landscape paintings that established his reputation over the previous decade.

Published by Kerber Verlag to accompany a 1998 touring exhibition at Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Kunsthalle Nürnberg, the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London and Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin, the book reproduces the paintings alongside bilingual German and English texts by Terry R. Myers, Hans-Werner Schmidt and Felicity Lunn. Its title is drawn from Blizzard, Seventy-Seven, one of the included canvases, in which a city skyline dissolves behind a static-like scatter of white paint.

Doig (born 1959, Edinburgh, raised in Trinidad and Canada) had by the late 1990s become known for reworking found photographs and film stills into thickly worked, half-remembered landscapes, many drawn from the Canadian housing developments of his childhood. This catalogue documents him just before the wider international attention that followed, and remains an early record of the body of work that built his critical and market standing.
