Go West Young Man

Go West Young Man is the catalogue for Peter Doig's 2006 exhibition at the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, surveying the Scottish-born painter's dreamlike, densely worked landscapes and isolated figures.

Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König to accompany the Leipzig show, the bilingual German/English paperback reproduces paintings exhibited at the museum alongside essays by curator Hans-Werner Schmidt and critic Rudolf Fuchs, tracing Doig's recurring motifs of canoes, snow, and lone figures set against thickly built-up, luminous grounds.

Doig (b. 1959) trained in London and spent two decades living in Trinidad, developing a signature technique of translucent, layered paint that recasts memory and found photographic imagery as hallucinatory scenes. By 2006 he was among the most acclaimed painters of his generation, and this exhibition placed his work within a German institutional context alongside his ongoing gallery presentations in London and New York.
