Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa
Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa documents an exhibition of new paintings Peter Doig showed at the Palazzetto Tito in Venice in 2016, mixing large- and small-scale canvases in the foundation's historic rooms.
Koenig Books published the catalogue to accompany the show. At 52 pages it is built as an object in its own right, with a printed slipcase, a vellum jacket, and five gatefold pages that let the reproductions carry the paintings' color at scale. The new work draws on private and found imagery, including a recurring lion motif that appears on the book's jacket, and the catalogue pairs installation photographs of the Palazzetto's rooms with plates of the paintings themselves. Essays by curator Milovan Farronato and art historian Richard Shiff accompany the images.
Doig was born in Edinburgh in 1959 and spent much of his childhood in Trinidad and Canada before studying art in London. His paintings work from memory and found photographs, filtered through layered, often unnatural color, in landscapes that move between Canadian snowscapes and Caribbean scenes. Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa catches him working at a more intimate register than the large exhibition canvases most associated with him.
