Brooklyn 11211
"Brooklyn 11211" is a black-and-white photobook by Jesper Haynes made from nighttime images shot down onto the corner of 404 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Haynes took the pictures from the window of his fourth-floor walk-up, above a Brazilian restaurant, without the street below ever noticing him, he writes, except once, when a police officer spotted him leaning out with a camera and Haynes had to go downstairs to explain himself. The resulting sequence reads as a bird's-eye view of one small corner of the neighborhood rather than a conventional street-level document. Pinkuneko Publishing, Haynes's own imprint, issued the softcover book in 2016; the copy catalogued here is a second printing from that year.
Haynes is a self-published street photographer who works in raw, grainy black and white across a run of small-press books and zines under the Pinkuneko imprint, among them "St. Marks 1986-2006," the "Haynesville" zine series, "Shibuya Scramble," and "GIG," moving between New York, Tokyo, and Bangkok.
