GIG
"GIG" is Jesper Haynes's photobook on Bangkok's independent art, music, and film scene between 2003 and 2013. It is centered on Gig Groceries, a bar on Sukhumvit Soi 16 that served as one of the scene's hubs.
The 184-page black-and-white book gathers images made over the bar's decade-long run. Bands jammed together, films screened on the walls, and anyone moved to DJ did so. Haynes calls the project a tribute to the scene and the people who sustained it after Gig Groceries closed. Pinkuneko Publishing issued it in 2015 in four softcover color options, blue, green, purple, and yellow, with the interior photographs printed on correspondingly tinted paper chosen at random.
The book followed a 2013 solo exhibition of the same material at Moose gallery in Bangkok. It joins Haynes's other self-published projects, among them "Brooklyn 11211," "Shibuya Scramble," and the "Haynesville" zine series, documenting scenes in New York, Tokyo, and Bangkok.
