Ghost

Famed for her intimate painted portraits, Elizabeth Peyton (born 1965) has also produced a wide range of prints over the past two decades — monotypes, lithographs, woodcuts and etchings worked across diverse paper stocks and inks. In contrast to the diminutive scale of her paintings, the prints, particularly the lithographs and monotypes, are notably large.

Published to accompany the exhibition Ghost: Elizabeth Peyton at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, and Opelvillen Rüsselsheim in 2011, this monograph is the first sustained study of Peyton as a critical printmaker. Subjects include historical figures such as William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, and Richard Wagner; artists including Frida Kahlo, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe; musicians from Eminem to Kurt Cobain; and Peyton's own circle of friends. The book includes essays by Sabine Eckmann and Hilton Als, and an interview with the artist conducted by Beate Kemfert.

More recently Peyton has turned toward still life, extending a practice long defined by an intensely subjective, romantic mode of portraiture that helped define figurative painting in the 1990s and 2000s.
