Here She Comes Now
The catalogue of Elizabeth Peyton’s 2013 exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, the first to gather her portraits of musicians as a body of work in their own right.
Rock performers such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty, the Gallagher brothers, John Lydon and Keith Richards appear alongside opera singers including Jessye Norman, Jonas Kaufmann and Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld, shown not in formal poses but in performance. The source snapshots and archival photographs are reproduced en face with the finished oils and works on paper, surveying twenty years of painting and drawing and making visible how Peyton edits a found image into a portrait. Texts by curator Johan Holten and Dodie Kazanjian; 64 colour plates, in English and German.
Peyton (b. 1965) came to prominence in the 1990s with small, jewel-toned portraits of friends, musicians and historical figures, and her painting has since been the subject of surveys at the New Museum, the Whitechapel Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Here She Comes Now sits alongside the collection’s other Peyton titles, including Aire and Angels and the Hatje Cantz monograph.
