Tomorrow's Man 3 by Jack Pierson

Tomorrow's Man 3

by Jack Pierson
Bywater Bros. Editions · 2015 · Softcover

The tightest and most deliberate volume of Jack Pierson's (b. 1960) Tomorrow's Man artist-book series, the 2015 third installment strips the anthology down to just four voices and lets classic figure photography collide with urgent geo-political text.

Published by Bywater Bros. Editions, edited and designed by Pierson with publisher Roger Bywater, the 120-page softcover interleaves Pierson's sun-drenched nude figure studies — shot on beaches and boardwalks in the vernacular of classic physique photography — with Richard Tinkler's delicate geometric abstractions, activist text works by Peter Fend crying out for environmental justice, and a short story by Veralyn Behenna. The volume was issued in four variant covers, with a sold-out hardcover edition of 75 that included an original signed and numbered photograph, and reads as a sophisticated meditation on culture and nature.

Pierson, a Boston School alumnus alongside Nan Goldin and Mark Morrisroe, threads queer desire through photography, collage and his found-letter word sculptures his work is held by the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney and the Guggenheim. All six Tomorrow's Man volumes are held in this collection.
