John Stezaker: Rubell Family Collection

Published by the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, in 2007, this catalog — edited by the museum's then-director Mark Coetzee — was among the first American surveys of the British collagist John Stezaker (b. 1949), drawn from the Rubells' holdings of his cut-and-paste appropriations of vintage film stills, postcards, and book plates.

The 128-page hardcover reproduces the work in color and black and white, with an essay by the critic Michael Bracewell. Stezaker's collages proceed by a single, exacting cut: film-star publicity stills spliced with postcard landscapes, faces interrupted by other faces, the seams of the source material left legible rather than smoothed away. The catalog situates that practice within an American collecting context years before Stezaker's wider institutional recognition.

Stezaker came to prominence among the British conceptualists of the 1970s and received the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2012, following his 2011 Whitechapel Gallery retrospective. He is represented by The Approach, London, and Petzel Gallery, New York. This is the earliest of the four Stezaker titles in the library, alongside Silkscreens, Nude and Landscape, and One on One.
