Silkscreens

The first comprehensive gathering of the silkscreens of John Stezaker (b. 1949), a side of the British collagist little known next to his small, intimate collages of film stills and postcards.

Spanning 1977 to 1994, the mid- to large-scale silkscreens work Stezaker's found imagery at the scale of painting: manipulated kissing couples, disembodied men and women, floating baby-heads, and film stills, estranged through enlargement and repetition. Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith's essay is the first text to consider the silkscreens as a whole body of work. The 144-page volume, with 85 color illustrations, was published by Ridinghouse with Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York and The Approach, London, on the occasion of John Stezaker: Silkscreens at Capitain Petzel, Berlin (September 18 – October 30, 2010).

Stezaker came to prominence among the British conceptualists of the 1970s and received the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2012, following his 2011 Whitechapel Gallery retrospective. He is represented by The Approach and Petzel Gallery. This is the third Stezaker title in the library, alongside Nude and Landscape and the Rubell Family Collection volume.
