Andy Warhol The Last Decade

by Andy Warhol
Milwaukee Art Museum · 2009 · Paperback

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade is the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name, organized by curator Joseph D. Ketner II. It opened at the Milwaukee Art Museum on September 26, 2009, ran through January 3, 2010, and then traveled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The show made the case that Warhol's final years, 1978 to 1987, were his most experimental, not a decline after Pop's commercial peak.

Ketner's essay, "Warhol's Last Decade: Reinventing Painting," anchors the book. Keith Hartley writes on Warhol's turn to abstraction, and Gregory Volk covers the late work more broadly. The catalogue also carries firsthand reflections from three people who worked alongside Warhol. Julian Schnabel writes on the Shadow paintings. Bruno Bischofberger writes on collaborating with Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Francesco Clemente. Keith Haring writes on the late abstract canvases. Together, the texts cover a body of work that Warhol's Pop-era reputation had pushed to the margins: the Oxidation paintings, camouflage canvases, Rorschach-derived abstractions, and the large collaborative paintings.

Published by the Milwaukee Art Museum with DelMonico Books/Prestel in 2009, the book runs 223 pages, illustrated chiefly in color.
