Warhol : le grand monde d'Andy Warhol
Le grand monde d'Andy Warhol is the catalogue of the 2009 exhibition at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris, which treated Warhol's portrait practice as a subject in itself.
Alain Cueff is the credited author. The book concentrates on the portraits Warhol made from 1972, about 600 over fourteen years, and presents more than 200 of the figures he portrayed. It reads them as portraiture of a court and places them within his wider investigation of the image in the age of mass consumption, following his method of Polaroid, selection and silkscreen. RMN published the 368-page French-language paperback in 2009.
Warhol was born in Pittsburgh in 1928 and died in New York in 1987. He learned silkscreen printing around 1961, moved his studio to 231 East 47th Street in 1964, where it became the Factory, and founded Interview magazine with John Wilcock in 1969. His Mao screenprints, shown at Leo Castelli Gallery in November 1972, mark the turn to the portrait series and commissions that this catalogue follows.
