Warhol from the Sonnabend Collection by Andy Warhol

Warhol from the Sonnabend Collection

by Andy Warhol
Rizzoli / Gagosian Gallery · 2009 · Hardcover

Warhol from the Sonnabend Collection surveys the Warhol works that dealer Ileana Sonnabend bought directly from the artist's studio. These pictures came out of her close working relationship with him, not the open market.

Gagosian and Rizzoli published the 180-page hardcover in 2009. It pairs the works with facsimiles of the catalogues and invitations from Sonnabend's own Paris and New York shows of Warhol between 1964 and 1967. It also includes private letters between Warhol and Sonnabend, published here for the first time. John Richardson, biographer of Picasso, and Warhol scholar Brenda Richardson contribute essays. Both trace the pictures and Sonnabend's role as one of the first European dealers to champion Warhol and American Pop art.

Warhol (1928-1987) turned consumer packaging and celebrity photographs into repeated, screenprinted icons, from the Campbell's Soup Cans to the Marilyn and Elvis series. Sonnabend ran galleries in Paris and later New York. She gave Warhol some of his earliest and most consequential European exposure. This volume documents that early alliance through the specific works she kept.
