Marigolds
"Marigolds" is the catalogue for Alex Da Corte's solo exhibition at Karma in New York, on view September through November 2019.
The book reprints Eugenia Collier's 1969 short story "Marigolds," from which the exhibition and volume take their title. Collier's marigold stands for both good fortune and grief. The volume also includes two newly commissioned texts, by critic Tausif Noor and by animator and historian John Canemaker. Karma published it in a limited edition of 750 copies, softcover, 40 pages.
Da Corte's installations draw on pop iconography, animation, and consumer imagery staged inside saturated, dreamlike environments. He uses that image-culture to probe the absurdities of consumer life alongside the sadness beneath its bright surfaces. The doubled symbol at the center of "Marigolds" makes that pairing explicit.
