True Life
"True Life" gathers four exhibitions, staged between Detroit and Köln over roughly a decade, in which Alex Da Corte returns again and again to the figure of Eminem as a subject for restaging, refraction, and self-portraiture.
Essays by Hilton Als, Charlie Fox, William Pym, Martine Syms, and art historian Moritz Wesseler examine Eminem's place in American culture and his recurring presence across the four shows. The book closes with a conversation between Da Corte and the Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth, keyed to Leth's 1982 short film "Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger." Published by Walther König in 2020, the catalogue runs 316 pages in hardcover.
Da Corte works across sculpture, video, and installation, restaging pop and consumer imagery inside tightly controlled, theatrical environments. "True Life" extends that method into a sustained, multi-venue portrait built through another public figure's image.
