Sparrows On the Stone (Sadie Coles exhibition booklet)
Sparrows On the Stone is the booklet Helen Marten made for her 2021 exhibition of the same name at Sadie Coles HQ in London, pairing an essay on temper with diagrams of the works.
The show ran at 62 Kingly Street from 4 September to 30 October 2021 and comprised 12 paintings, 2 floor-based sculptures and 14 works on paper. Six freestanding walls, tied together by hung cables and conduits, were laid out at the scale of the gallery as a stick figure, each wall standing in for part of a body. The booklet looks closely at that system of silk-screened paintings with sculptural appendages and one large sculpture. Marten's essay on the forms temper takes sits beside diagrams, annotations and details of individual works. It is a softcover in an edition of 500, sold in a hand-printed envelope with two inserts.
Marten was born in Macclesfield in 1985 and works across sculpture, painting, video and writing. She won the 2016 Turner Prize, and her work is in the collections of Tate, the Museum of Modern Art and the Stedelijk Museum, among others. Her book The Boiled in Between was published in London by Prototype in 2020.
