Triangle Books · 2017

Drawings (2017) is the first volume of Eddie Martinez’s drawings trilogy from Triangle Books, gathering his works on paper from 2005 up to the time of publication.

Many of the drawings had not been shown before and come from the artist’s archive. They range from figurative to abstract and back, and recurring figures, shapes and kinds of mark accumulate across the sequence into a private set of motifs. The book is a hardcover of 448 pages with 307 images, issued in an edition of 1000. Two further volumes followed: More Drawings in 2020 and Extra Drawings in 2023.

Martinez was born in 1977 at Groton Naval Base, Connecticut, and lives and works in Brooklyn. His artist’s website describes him as a painter and sculptor, best known for large paintings that combine figuration and abstraction, painting and drawing, in oil, enamel and spray paint, often with collaged found objects. It notes that many of his works recall CoBrA and action painting, and others the late work of Philip Guston.
