Confabulations

A dictionary will tell you that confabulations are memory disturbances, the sincere production of fabricated, distorted memories about oneself and the world, made without any conscious intention to deceive.

With Confabulations, Torbjorn Rodland presents a set of analogue photographs that subtly misrepresent broken memories and childhood fantasies, distorting facts to get at a different order of truth. The book gathers Rodland's staged, uncannily lit images of bodies, objects, and domestic scenes, treating fragmentation not as something to reject or induce but as a starting point for unexpected connections between pictures. It is published by MACK as a clothbound hardcover with foil-stamped titling.

Rodland has spent two decades photographing with a deliberately anachronistic, almost commercial sheen, using the vocabulary of advertising and studio photography to unsettle rather than reassure. Confabulations continues that project, treating the camera and its attendant apparatus of lenses, lighting, and film as one point of connectivity among many rather than a neutral recorder of the world.
