Fifth Honeymoon

Fifth Honeymoon collects Torbjørn Rødland's recent photographs, images that stage familiar subjects — hands, food, teenagers, domestic objects — until they curdle into something uncanny.

Rødland works in a highly controlled studio style closer to advertising or fashion photography than documentary practice, using that polish to unsettle rather than reassure. The pictures gathered here recur across bodies and objects treated as interchangeable material, building a private symbolic language out of banal props. The volume includes critical texts by the theorist Sianne Ngai and the artist Matias Faldbakken, alongside contributions from Steinar Sekkingstad and Axel Wieder, and was published by Sternberg Press with US distribution through MIT Press.

Rødland, a Norwegian photographer based in Los Angeles, has built a body of work that sits between fine-art photography and vernacular image-making, exhibited widely at institutions including the Serpentine Galleries and the Astrup Fearnley Museum. Fifth Honeymoon extends the deadpan, quietly disturbing register of earlier books such as Vanilla Partner and Nature Photos.
