Vanilla Partner

Vanilla Partner collects a body of staged color photographs by the Norwegian artist Torbjørn Rødland, built from pairings and juxtapositions that feel simultaneously banal and quietly wrong.

Rødland works in a highly controlled, almost clinical style of studio and location photography, posing bodies, food, and everyday objects into compositions that carry an undertow of discomfort, humor, or desire without resolving into any single reading. The book's title nods to the flatness and blandness Rødland's images seem to court on the surface, even as their content pushes toward the strange. MACK published the 158-page hardcover in 2012.

Rødland, based between Los Angeles and Oslo, has built a distinctive body of photographic work over three decades that treats the medium's technical polish as a tool for unease rather than reassurance, exhibiting widely at institutions including the Serpentine Galleries and Fotomuseum Winterthur. Vanilla Partner sits within a run of MACK-published monographs — including Fifth Honeymoon and The Touch That Made You — that trace this recurring visual language across his career.
