Portraits
Portraits collects Wolfgang Tillmans's portrait photographs made between 1988 and 2001, in a selection he made himself.
The sitters include the filmmaker John Waters, the architect Rem Koolhaas, the musicians Moby and Michael Stipe and the actresses Irm Hermann and Chloë Sevigny, along with the artist's family and friends. Tillmans wrote the text. The publisher describes his portraiture as a collaboration with each sitter, and says that the pictures often called casual come out of a constructed process of engagement. D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers issued this clothbound edition in New York in 2001, at 144 pages with 68 in colour. Tillmans's own bibliography also lists a Cologne edition from Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König dated the same year.
Tillmans was born in Remscheid in 1968 and studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design from 1990 to 1992. He won the Turner Prize in 2000 and was the first photographer to do so. His artist's books of these years include volumes of the Wako Book series, published by Wako Works of Art in Tokyo in 1999, 2001 and 2004.
