Wolfgang Tillmans: Kunsthalle Zürich

by Wolfgang Tillmans
JRP Ringier Kunstverlag · 1995 · Hardcover

Wolfgang Tillmans: Kunsthalle Zürich is the catalogue for the artist's 1995 exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich, one of his earliest institutional surveys.

The 81-page volume, bound in gray-green boards with photo-illustrated covers, reproduces the photographs shown in the exhibition, which ran from March 25 to May 21, 1995, alongside texts by Bernhard Bürgi and Bettina Marbach in English, German and French. The show came early in Tillmans's career, at a moment when his mix of portraiture, still life, club and street photography, hung without hierarchy between large prints and magazine-scale images, was still an unfamiliar curatorial proposition for a museum context. This edition is a later reprint of the original 1995 Kunsthalle Zürich catalogue.

Tillmans is a German photographer whose work spans portraiture, abstraction, still life and installation, shown widely at institutions including Tate Britain, where he won the Turner Prize in 2000. The Kunsthalle Zürich exhibition and catalogue mark an early moment in a career that would go on to include dozens of major museum surveys.
