Album

Album is Hans-Peter Feldmann's wordless survey of the personal image archive he assembled over decades, presenting roughly 3,000 photographs in sequence with no text beyond the title page.

Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König as a cloth-bound hardcover, the book opens with a photograph of Feldmann's own archive boxes, accumulated from magazines, advertising, photography books, postcards, and curios, then interleaves these found images with his travel photographs, family snapshots, and pictures of friends. The sequencing itself becomes the artist's gesture, building narrative and rhythm from juxtaposition alone.

Feldmann (1941-2023) built a body of work around collecting, archiving, and re-presenting ordinary photographs, arguing that images should be cheap and easy to produce rather than precious or unique. Album extends the interests of earlier projects like Voyeur and his postcard collections. He is one of the key figures to treat the found photograph as raw material for art.
