Nervous Breakdown

Subtitled Album Covers, this is the first book to gather every record, CD, and cassette sleeve since 1979 to feature the artwork of Raymond Pettibon (b. 1957), the Southern California artist whose ink drawings became the visual signature of American punk and alternative music.

Spanning more than four decades, it traces his collaborations with Black Flag (whose logo and early sleeves he designed for his brother Greg Ginn’s SST label), Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop, Minutemen, and, more recently, Lana Del Rey, mapping Pettibon’s outsized influence on the look of alternative culture from the late 1970s to today.

Drawn from the Stefan Thull Collection, the volume reproduces 301 illustrations and carries a foreword by René Zechlin and Astrid Ihle and essays by Max Dax, Robert Eikmeyer, the musician and artist Kim Gordon, and Ulrich Loock. Designed by Studio Sven Michel, Berlin, and printed by VeronaLibri, it was published by David Zwirner Books with the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum to accompany the exhibition of more than 200 works from the Thull collection in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
