Raymond Pettibon
Raymond Pettibon is a survey of the American artist’s drawings, edited by Ralph Rugoff, that runs from his early flyers for the punk band Black Flag to the political work of his recent years.
Rizzoli issued this 384-page hardcover in its Rizzoli Classics series in 2016. Rizzoli says the book was made in close collaboration with the artist. It covers about thirty years of his output, including unpublished pieces, work from zines and posters, and excerpts from screenplays. Robert Storr, Mike Kelley and Kitty Scott contribute texts, and Jonathan Lethem made a collaboration with Pettibon that was commissioned for the book. A bookseller’s description says this edition is smaller than the earlier one and keeps all of its content.
Pettibon was born in Tucson in 1957 and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. His drawings first drew notice when they were used for advertisements, zines and record covers in the Los Angeles punk scene of the 1980s. The New Museum in New York gave him a major survey in 2017.
