The Pages Which Contain Truth Are Blank
The Pages Which Contain Truth Are Blank is a catalogue of Raymond Pettibon's drawings that reproduces more than 140 works on paper from Austrian collections, most of them never reproduced before.
Museion and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna published it in 2003 with Skarabaeus of the Studienverlag, to accompany a travelling retrospective with venues in Bolzano, Bologna and Innsbruck. Andreas Hapkemeyer and Luca Beatrice are the credited authors. The 132-page quarto in illustrated wrappers was designed by Alexander Rendi, prints the drawings in colour and black and white, and closes with an exhibition history and a checklist.
Pettibon was born Raymond Ginn in Tucson in 1957 and lives in New York. He came up in the Los Angeles punk scene. He suggested the name Black Flag for his brother Greg Ginn's band, designed its four-bar logo and made artwork for the band and SST Records through the early 1980s. From 1978 he issued photocopied booklets of drawings called Superflux Pubs. He works mainly in India ink and pairs image with text, and his subject is American culture and counterculture, treated in darkly ironic and sometimes violent images. He was in the Whitney Biennial in 1993, 1997 and 2004, and the New Museum gave him a retrospective in 2017.
