Raymond Pettibon: Homo Americanus: Collected Works
Homo Americanus: Collected Works is the catalogue of Raymond Pettibon’s 2016 survey at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg – Sammlung Falckenberg, with more than 600 works from across his career, most of them not shown before.
David Zwirner Books published the 692-page hardcover with the Deichtorhallen in 2016. It has about 575 color reproductions arranged in thirty-two thematic chapters. Each section opens with excerpts from interviews with Pettibon, and curator Ulrich Loock discusses them further in an appendix. The book reprints a complete facsimile of Captive Chains, his first artist’s book, and adds early drawings made with his nephew, record covers, flyers, and collages and drawings from the 1980s onward. Lucas Zwirner compiled biographical notes. Dirk Luckow and Sabine Breitwieser wrote the foreword, and Loock and Harald Falckenberg the introduction.
Pettibon was born in Tucson in 1957. His drawings combine image and text and draw on literature, art history, philosophy, religion, politics, sports and alternative youth culture. The Hamburg exhibition traveled to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and in 2017 the New Museum in New York gave him its first museum survey of his work in that city, A Pen of All Work.
