If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters
If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters is the catalogue Tate Publishing produced for Wolfgang Tillmans's 2003 exhibition at Tate Britain, his first major show at the museum since winning the Turner Prize three years before.
The exhibition ran at Tate Britain from 6 June to 4 September 2003, free to visit, in partnership with The Guardian and sponsored by the Tate International Council. Tate's own account describes Tillmans's landscapes, still lifes and portraits as an alternative to conventional ideas of beauty, spontaneous-looking despite being carefully planned, and notes he had recently begun making abstract compositions from light acting directly on photo-sensitive paper, alongside video work including a Pet Shop Boys music video and the installation Lights (Body) 2000–2; a new film premiered at Tate Britain during the run. The 312-page paperback pairs Tillmans's text with an interview by curator Mary Horlock; a separate German translation by Marion Kagerer followed from Hatje Cantz.
Tillmans, born in Remscheid in 1968, was the first photographer and the first non-British artist to win the Turner Prize, in 2000. This Tate Britain exhibition and its catalogue followed directly from that recognition and remain a marker of his standing in the UK's national collection.
