Lighter
Lighter collects Wolfgang Tillmans's recent abstract work, above all the creased photographic-paper pieces he has made since 2005, in which the photograph is treated as a physical object and not as a picture of something.
Hatje Cantz published it as the catalogue for Tillmans's 2008 exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. Joachim Jäger edited it, with texts by Jäger, Daniel Birnbaum and Julie Ault. It brings the Lighter works together with the paper drops, compositions that depict the sheet of photographic paper itself, for the first time in one volume. It also carries installation views of his exhibitions, photographed by Tillmans, which show how the work looked on his recent museum tour of the United States. The clothbound book has 400 pages and 146 photographs, with text in German and English, and received the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis in 2009.
The publisher places these pieces after earlier abstract series: the Blushes pictures, the room-filling Freischwimmer works and the monochrome Silver prints. Tillmans was born in Remscheid in 1968 and won the Turner Prize.
