Neue Welt by Wolfgang Tillmans

Neue Welt

by Wolfgang Tillmans
Taschen · 2012

Neue Welt gathers Wolfgang Tillmans’s photographs from travels around the world, and it is the Taschen volume in which he first made use of digital photography.

Taschen published it in 2012 as a 216-page paperback, 22.7 by 30 cm, in English, German and French, with an interview between Tillmans and the curator Beatrix Ruf. The pictures start in London and reach Tierra del Fuego, India, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia and Central Africa, taking in people, markets, technology, architecture, nature and astronomy. Tillmans calls his travels aimless: he does not go looking for set results but hopes to come across subjects that speak about the moment he is in. Kunsthalle Zürich staged a Neue Welt exhibition from 31 August to 3 November 2012. Taschen also issued a signed and numbered Art Edition of 500, a portfolio of 24 folded sheets carrying 72 of the photographs.

Tillmans was born in Remscheid in 1968, won the Turner Prize in 2000 and lives in Berlin and London. Neue Welt is the fourth of his books from Taschen, which later collected all four in a single volume, four books.
