Why We Must Provide HIV Treatment Information
Why We Must Provide HIV Treatment Information is a 96-page booklet HIV i-Base published in London in 2007, built around photographs Wolfgang Tillmans took for the project.
The book documents a meeting held in Cape Town in March 2006 on treatment literacy and how it had developed in different countries. It combines text from HIV treatment activists in twenty-five countries with fifty full-colour photographs by Tillmans. HIV i-Base, the London organisation behind it, is a community-led HIV treatment activist group founded in April 2000. Its resources are produced by and with people living with HIV, alongside a medical advisory board.
Tillmans contracted HIV at 26 from his boyfriend and longtime collaborator Jochen Klein, who died of AIDS in 1997. He has spoken about how that experience runs through his work. His 2014 photograph "17 Years' Supply," showing a box of HIV drug bottles marked with his own name, returns to the subject directly. In 2022 the New York Times commissioned him to photograph Anthony Fauci and to talk with him about HIV, his first assignment for the paper.
