Wolfgang Tillmans
This Hatje Cantz monograph, edited by Fondation Beyeler chief curator Theodora Vischer, catalogues Wolfgang Tillmans's 2017 exhibition at the Beyeler in Riehen, near Basel. It shares its bare title, Wolfgang Tillmans, with three earlier books already in this library. It is a wholly separate publication all the same: a different publisher, a different editor, a different exhibition.
Tillmans used the Beyeler's galleries much as he uses any wall. Prints of varying size and subject hang together, unframed, at uneven heights, so a still life sits beside an abstraction sits beside a portrait. The book follows that installation logic rather than sorting the work by series or date. Vischer's essay addresses Tillmans's approach to exhibition-making directly, treating the hang itself as part of the argument the show makes.
Tillmans was born in 1968 in Remscheid, Germany, and won the Turner Prize in 2000, the first photographer and the first non-British-born artist to do so. Two Phaidon monographs share this book's bare title: a 2002 volume and an expanded 2013 edition. This Fondation Beyeler edition falls between them, and it predates his later career-survey catalogues Sound Is Liquid, To Look Without Fear, and Nothing Could Have Prepared Us. Readers and catalogers should identify this copy by its publisher and year, Hatje Cantz 2017, to avoid confusing it with the Taschen 1995, Phaidon 2002, or Phaidon 2013 editions already on the shelf.
