Neighbors
"Neighbors" surveys over 15 years of Roe Ethridge's photography, moving between family snapshots, rural landscapes, and images of farm animals.
Divided into three chapters bookended by deadpan series of grey rural beach scenes and pictures of turkeys, pigs, and goats, the book spans Ethridge's practice from early self-published projects to recent work, mixing editorial, commercial, and personal photography. It includes an essay by curator Kevin Moore, who organized Ethridge's mid-career survey "Roe Ethridge: Nearest Neighbor" for the 2016 FotoFocus Biennial at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. The title plays on "nearest neighbor," a digital image-resizing technique, and on Ethridge's habit of casting family, friends, and himself as subjects, including in his editorial assignments. MACK published the book in October 2016 as a printed-paper hardback, 96 pages with 134 colour plates.
Ethridge (b. 1969, Miami) has shown at MoMA/PS1 (2000), the Barbican (2001), the Carnegie Museum of Art (2002), ICA Boston (2005), the Whitney Biennial (2008), MoMA New York (2010), and Les Rencontres d'Arles (2011), and was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2011. His other MACK monographs include "Le Luxe" (2012), "Sacrifice Your Body" (2014), and "Shelter Island" (2016).
