Roe Ethridge and Zin Taylor: The Ceremony and the Spirit
"The Ceremony and the Spirit" documents a 2012–13 site-specific dialogue between photographer Roe Ethridge and Canadian artist Zin Taylor, staged inside a former Masonic temple in Brussels.
Co-published by Karma (New York) and La Loge (Brussels) on the occasion of the artists' exhibition of the same name at La Loge, the book grew from Taylor and Ethridge's exchange with the building itself, a 1934–35 modernist temple designed by Fernand Bodson and Louis Van Hooveld. Taylor made site-specific ceremonial objects in response to the space; Ethridge photographed them, and the two men's email correspondence runs through the book as text. One exchange reads: "I guess I'm trying to find a structure where you and I get to throw in our opinions about stuff, our ideas about stuff and have those negotiated within the composition... as we're at the service of the building." The edition of 500 runs 72 pages.
Ethridge (b. 1969, Miami) works across editorial, commercial, and personal photography; his other monographs include "Sacrifice Your Body" (MACK, 2014), "Neighbors" (MACK, 2016), and "Shelter Island" (MACK, 2016). Taylor, based in Brussels, works across sculpture, writing, and site-specific commission and is often described as a "narrator of forms."
