Shelter Island by Roe Ethridge
"Shelter Island" collects photographs Roe Ethridge made during a family summer stay in a rented "all-American kit house" on Long Island, New York.
In the garage, Ethridge and his family found objects a previous family had left behind: dusty cola bottles, a plastic bat, a fallen kite. These faded leitmotifs of an older Americana run through the book's images, which Ethridge treats as at once acutely personal and stylized, synthetic and spontaneous, playing familiar photographic tropes askance. MACK published the book in January 2016 as a singer-sewn paperback, 32 pages with 15 colour plates.
Ethridge (b. 1969, Miami) has shown at MoMA/PS1 (2000), the Barbican (2001), the Carnegie Museum of Art (2002), ICA Boston (2005), the Whitney Biennial (2008), MoMA New York (2010), and Les Rencontres d'Arles (2011), and was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2011. His other MACK monographs include "Le Luxe" (2012) and "Sacrifice Your Body" (2014).
