Sacrifice Your Body by Roe Ethridge

Sacrifice Your Body

by Roe Ethridge
MACK · 2014

"Sacrifice Your Body" combines personal documentary photographs Roe Ethridge made in western Palm Beach County, his mother's childhood home, with surreal collage work and pictures rejected from a Chanel fashion shoot.

The images are combined with a staged sequence of a white Durango SUV sinking into and then being pulled from a canal. MACK ties the clash of visual styles to the book's neon-lettered title and compares the effect to the discomfort of David Lynch's films. Ethridge's practice has been called "the new school of synthetic photography" for the way it conflates commercial, documentary, and fine-art photographic tropes. MACK published the book in 2014.

Ethridge (b. 1969, Miami) has shown at MoMA/PS1 (2000), the Barbican (2001), the Carnegie Museum of Art (2002), ICA Boston (2005), the Whitney Biennial (2008), MoMA New York (2010), and Les Rencontres d'Arles (2011), and was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2011. His other MACK monographs include "Le Luxe" (2012), "Neighbors" (2016), and "Shelter Island" (2016).
