Roe Ethridge: Rockaway, New York
"Rockaway, NY" gathers Roe Ethridge photographs that read at first as nostalgic scenes of a single coastal village: a snow-covered boardwalk, a cemetery, shopfronts, a quiet street in late summer.
The pictures were made in scattered places, from St. Barts to upstate New York, but the locations blend into one another on the page. Ethridge works as archivist and wandering narrator at once. Steidl/MACK published the book in December 2007: a linen hardcover with jacket, 108 pages, 55 plates. Ethridge had the cover of Artforum's October 2003 issue. Kate Bush, writing on his work there, called him "as technically adept as a commercial photographer yet as thoughtful as a Conceptualist about photography's role and meaning in the modern world." She noted that in his pictures there is "no discrimination between editorial and art, between document and construct, between technology and affect."
Ethridge (b. 1969, Miami) has had solo shows at the Institutes of Contemporary Art in Boston, Palm Beach, and Philadelphia, and at Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York, and Greengrassi Gallery, London. His other MACK monographs include "Sacrifice Your Body" (2014), "Neighbors" (2016), and "Shelter Island" (2016).
