Das New Yorker Atelier documents a significant new body of work by Wade Guyton, moving beyond his signature repeated letterforms into paintings built from a diverse range of digitally captured imagery.
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König to accompany Guyton's 2017 exhibition at Museum Brandhorst, Munich, the 356-page hardcover reproduces large-format inkjet paintings made from cell-phone snapshots, screenshots, and digital enlargements, including recognizable subjects such as newspaper homepages and views of his Bowery studio alongside passages that dissolve into abstraction under extreme magnification. Edited by Achim Hochdörfer with essays by Hochdörfer, Johanna Burton, and Bernhard Maaz, the book examines how the work registers what it calls the rapid expansion of digital code into all areas of life.
Guyton (b. 1972) works at the boundary of painting and photography, feeding raw linen through large-format Epson printers to produce paintings that are simultaneously mechanically reproduced and materially unique. This volume extends a long-running series of exhibition publications documenting his studio practice, following his 2007 Walther König debut monograph and subsequent gallery and museum catalogues.
